Eligibility

Open to those whose income is at or below 60% of the state median income level (see guidelines on the CEFS LIHEAP webpage); A letter will been sent to those who may be eligible for early application in Aug or Sep

Required documents

- Copy of Social Security cards for everyone in the household or ITIN for residents who have them (residents without ITIN or SSN can still apply) - A copy of Photo ID of head of household - Proof of 30-day income for the entire household, can be current Social Security letter, bank statement, paycheck stubs, or retirement income (this includes Social Security or Supplemental Security Income for any child in the home) - If the household has no income, a Zero Income Form must be completed for anyone 18 years old or older - A copy of current gas/electric/propane bill and current disconnect notice (if received), a disconnect notice or being behind on paying the bill is not required to apply - If applicable, a copy of Public Aid printout showing TANF and/or SNAP amounts

Description

Provides financial help with heating and electric bills. Applications are accepted starting October 1st through August 15th or when funding is exhausted.

October is a priority period reserved for elderly, disabled, families with children 5 and under, and disconnected households. The general population can apply starting November 1st.

This program is not designed to pay a household's total energy costs. The amount of the benefit is based on number in the household, the 30-day income of the household and the source of heat. This is a one-time payment to the household's energy provider.
