Offers assistance to residents of the Greene County to remove barriers to self-sufficiency and economic self-support. Services are provided in payment for such needs as rent, food, utilities, and county burials. Recipients must meet certain income guidelines.

Can also assists with applications for benefits made available by federal, state or local laws.


Provides rides to medical appointments to the VA Hospital in either Knoxville or Des Moines. Call at least 5 days ahead with the date of appointment and the time and location.

Provides coupons (or checks) to older individuals for use at farmer's markets, roadside stands, and community-supported agriculture programs for fresh nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey.

Offers a $50 in Farmers Market check to use at Farmers Market. Service available June 1st until the checks are gone.

Programs offered through Mills County General Relief are emergency rent and utility assistance, emergency food assistance (working in coordination with local food pantries), and burial assistance for indigent clients. Applications for Southern Iowa Regional Housing Authority (SIRHA) and rent reimbursement claims are also available.

The Mills County General Relief office helps clients assess their needs, assists in client referrals, and coordinates with other community resources as necessary. The General Relief office works closely with local organizations to ensure services are not duplicated and to maximize resources for resolving local poverty issues.

Provides monthly financial assistance to persons who do not have adequate income or resources to provide for their own basic needs. Funds may be disbursed for specific basic maintenance needs such as shelter (rental/mortgage assistance), utilities, food, clothing, household supplies, personal essentials, and laundry.

General Assistance eligibility is re-determined monthly, by appointment, and as long as the recipient maintains his/her eligibility, they may continue to receive a monthly General Assistance grant.

Offers a food pantry to those in need. Can also provide, as donations allow, personal items as well as food vouchers.

When funding allows, may be able to help with limited financial assistance for basic needs such as childcare payments, rent, rent deposits, utilities, food, hygiene products, car repairs, transportation, prescription costs, etc., through the Community Services Block Grant. Eligibility requirements will apply, and ongoing case management will be required. Contact your local County Outreach Office for more information.

Winneshiek Medical Center's Nutrition Services provides nutrition (dietary) information to seniors and farmers' market vouchers which are redeemable for fresh fruits and vegetables. The vouchers may be used anytime during the farmers' market season.
Provides emergency assistance for basic needs to county residence. Basic needs assistance includes rent and utility bill help, food, medical services (emergency dental extraction or prescriptions), transportation (fuel) and burial assistance (application must be made after death and before burial).

Program is for emergency needs that cannot be met by other means.

Provides assistance to individuals and families who are facing a crisis situation with food and/or shelter. Homeless prevention services can assist families who are facing eviction or utility disconnection in preventing their family from becoming homeless.

Crisis funds may be available for one month's rent, utilities, or groceries for a short period of time. This assistance is intended for individuals and families who need temporary, one-time assistance to resolve an emergency situation.

Provides congregate and home delivered meals to people 60 and over. Services also offered: weekend meals, holiday meals, monthly programs at sites, Iowa farmer's market applications in April-May. Locations are listed below.

- Newton Congregate serves on-site meals at 11:30 am Mon-Fri and is located at 2401 1st Avenue East. Call for reservations.

- Colfax Congregateserves on-site meals at 11:30 am Mon-Fri and is located at 1 Howard and Walnut. Call for reservations.

- Monroe Congregateserves on-site meals at 11:30 am Mon-Fri and is located at 206 West Sherman. Call for reservations.
