Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax preparation and electronic filing for low- to moderate-income Iowans, starting February 2025. Certified community volunteers prepare taxes with computer software and help with special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.

Offers free tax preparation to low-income families. Appointment scheduling will begin during the last week of January 2025.

Provides free tax credit clinics and prepares free federal and state income taxes for underserved populations.

Starting January 15, 2025, visit https://vita.unl.edu to schedule an appointment. Tax appointments begin Feb 1st and run through April 10th and are available at multiple sites in Lincoln. To see the days and times for all the locations, visit the website to download the site schedule.

When scheduling an appointment, choose a site location and date. All location will be face-to-face; virtual preparation is available in addition to facilitated self-assistance (schedule an appointment under the 'Get Free Tax Help' tab).

If Lincoln Public School and/or UNL is closed due to bad weather, all VITA sites are closed.

The scope of work that can be done within the VITA site is defined by the IRS. If a return is considered "out of scope" for the site, VITA Volunteers will not be able to prepare the return.
