Adult Basic Education

Offers English language classes for individuals with limited English proficiency. Morning and evening class times are available on campus and at the Rantoul location for beginners. Instruction is also offered for individuals needing to improve their basic literacy skills, obtain high school equivalency certificate, or prepare for college or careers.

Offers ESL classes for non-native English speakers, designed to focus on conversation, grammar, reading, and writing. Students are assessed on conversational ability as well as reading level. All levels of English language learners are welcomed.

Offers basic skills and computer literacy classes at local community centers, churches, non-profit organizations, and community colleges. Services include computer-based ESL, ESL, computer-based English/Spanish GED preparation, internet browsers, Microsoft Office, and project-based technology learning activities.

GED classes help adult students improve reading, math, science, and/or social studies knowledge, to help students pass the GED test and earn the equivalent of a high school diploma.

Citizenship classes help students prepare for the naturalization interview, as well as the 100 questions used for the civics portion of the naturalization test to become a US citizen. Classes meet twice a week, with one class being held in Columbus and one in Schuyler. Morning or evening classes are available, and students may start anytime during the year and continue for as long as needed until they have the confidence to pass the citizenship test. Classes are taught entirely in English; students must have a basic understanding of English to attend.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes help students learn English through conversation, writing, and listening.

One-on-one employability skills help individuals look for and apply for jobs and are tailored to specific needs.

Citizenship Education

Provides both English as a Second Language classes and Citizenship classes. Co-teachers are from the refugee communities served to better understand the students' culture and the barriers that students face while accessing community resources. The program also provides weekly conversation hours and other community-based support.

Also provides citizenship focused classes for eligible students from Burma.

English as a Second Language (ESL) for people who want to learn to speak, read and write English.

Strives to assist adults 17 years of age or older in acquiring knowledge and skills necessary to earn a GED, to improve English language skills, and to transition to higher educational or vocational training. Services offered:

Offers 5 transfer degree programs for undergraduates seeking full-time study or 70 degree and certificate programs for those seeking career preparation.

Community Education includes Adult Basic Ed, GED prep, ESL classes, transition programs, professional development courses and non-credit certificate programs. Provides both occupational and professional opportunities to businesses, industries, individuals, and health and government agencies through the region.

Offers English Language Learner Classes to those interested. Free childcare is provided. Classes may be joined at any time throughout the year. Summer session schedule may vary.

Provides free Immigration and Naturalization Assistance to help immigrants and refugees become US citizens.

Community education workshops will be offered, ESL/Citizenship Classes and legal assistance including preparing Naturalization and/or DACA applications.

English Language Acquisition (ELA) classes are offered in Clinton, Muscatine, Davenport, Bettendorf, Columbus Junction, and West Liberty.

ELA classes expand English communication skills for students who are not native English speakers. Classroom, small group and computer instruction are designed to promote reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students learn about personal communication, conducting business, work-related communication, and civic engagement.

Provides adult basic education, including literacy, ESL classes, and tutoring in reading and math.

Classes offered free to non-English speaking adults on Tue and Thu mornings in eight week sessions throughout the year. Registration required.
