Hardin County Community Services

Assists veterans, their widows, widowers, wives, and minor children with filling out forms to enroll in VA Healthcare system as well as burial benefits, education, home loan assistance, VA pensions, and Veterans Affairs Medical Van Available.

If a veteran needs a ride to a medical appointment, they may contact the Veterans Affairs Director at 641-373-0349 to arrange transportation with the VA Medical Van.

May also help with referrals to, or with funds, when available for food vouchers, rent and or utility payment and medical expense.

Warren County Offices

Provides assistance to Warren County residents who meet county guidelines. Assistance is given to those in need and poor who are unable to get assistance from other sources or that assistance is being delayed. Applicants must apply for all possible state and federal programs they may qualify for in order to receive assistance and comply with these programs. Assistance includes the services food pantry, rental assistance, utility assistance (must have a disconnect and made payments), medical, dental, and prescription assistance, as well as information and referral for such needs. Veterans that have served during designated times and have an honorable discharge would need to contact the office of Warren County Veteran Affairs to complete the application with them.

Provides assistance to veterans and their families with utilities, rent, mortgage interest, funeral and burial expenses, grave markers, and medical expenses for those unable to afford necessary care. Offers food vouchers that can be exchanged for food products at designated locations, supporting low-income individuals and families or other eligible populations. 

Additionally, assists veterans in applying for compensation and pension programs. Eligibility requires the veteran to have an honorable discharge, have served 90 days or more of Federal active duty, and be a county resident.

General Assistance provides temporary assistance for basic or special needs to low income persons who reside in Boone County. May help with the following financial needs when funding is available: Rental Assistance may be available to those in need. Will not help with deposits.

Utility Assistance: November 1-April 30, anyone seeking help for utilities must go through the LIHEAP program first. Those applying for Utility Assistance from G.A. must have an acceptance or denial letter from LIHEAP. Cremation Expense Assistance may be available to those who meet the income guidelines. Medical Expense Assistance may be available for medical/prescription supplies and assistance with transportation to out of town appointments. Serves as the Satellite Office for DHS Forms & Fax for Boone residents. DHS has been relocated to Story County at 126 South Kellogg, Suite 101, Ames, Iowa.

DHS Family Community Resource Center - Clay / Lawrence / Richland County

Provides medical and cash assistance for customers who are 65 years of age or older, blind, or disabled. Also includes the QMB (Qualified Medicare Beneficiary) program which provides payment of Medicare premiums and some Medicare co-payments.

The online application is called "Application for Benefits Eligibility (ABE)."  When applying, the state will determine the applicant's eligibility for this AABD, as well as SNAP and medical assistance (Medicaid).
