Warming centers open across the community when daytime temperatures are frigid. Centers are open when the Wind Chill Index (WCI) is expected to reach below freezing or air temperature goes down to at least 10 to 15 degrees.

Provides housing, meals, clothing, case management, life skills, health care and mental health care referrals, substance abuse treatment referrals, financial and job skills coaching, socialization and recreation opportunities to assist men experiencing homelessness to overcome the barriers that keep them from becoming housed and self-sufficient.

Cold Weather Shelter "Cold Cots": During the winter months when the temperatures are severely cold, the cold weather shelter opens expanding the 30 bed men's shelter to handle an additional 20 men providing them with a cot, a meal, and access to showers while space is available.

Offers shelter from the extreme heat at the Public Health Department.

Emergency 24 hour temporary shelter during winter months November 1st through April 30th. No drinking or drugs allowed at the shelters (cannot bring in alcohol, drugs, or weapons) but persons who are intoxicated are not turned away.

The Warming Shelter in Sioux City offers a temporary emergency shelter for people who do not have a warm place to stay out of the cold and winter weather. It is open from November 1st to April 30th annually.

Welcomes any and all who are in need of shelter, provides support necessary to help these individuals get their lives on track, provides shelter, food, and hope, stability, and finally help them on a path to reintegrate into the community and become a contributor to the region.

Offers an older Adult and Senior Activity Center that provides seniors a place to gather and socialize. Staff will help refer those in need to other agencies for help as needed. The Center also acts as a warming/cooling center for the general population of DeWitt County during times of emergency or disaster.

The Friendship Center is also a Peace Meal congregate and home-delivery site. Peace Meals are available weekly, Monday through Friday.

-- NEBRASKA PEER CENTER (OMAHA): Open to the public, including those banned from local shelters (unless involved in a safety concern). Offers coffee, water, and donuts when available.

-- IOWA PEER CENTER (COUNCIL BLUFFS): Individuals who are banned/barred from local shelters are not welcome. Serving adults with mental health concerns, substance use, or housing instability. Offers water, coffee, phone/computer, peer support staff, optional groups, case management for those who qualify. Hand warmers, gloves, hats, blankets available.

Offers a place for people to get out of the extreme cold/hot weather as it occurs in Ankeny and surrounding areas. Anyone is able to come in and enjoy the library services during regular business hours throughout these extreme weather events.

Provides shelter for those needing respite from the summer heat. The decision is determined by the Salvation Army. Bring any items to keep you entertained and comfortable.
Serves as a temporary warming center during extreme cold weather events and as a cooling center during extreme hot weather events as long as they are not holding another event that day.
