Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs that serve children from birth to age five, pregnant women and their families. The programs are child-focused and have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low-income families.

Both programs provide a range of individualized services in the areas of education, medical, dental and mental health, nutrition and social service to children and their families. Parent involvement is encouraged and support is offered for children with disabilities.

Maintains county parks and recreation areas and provides hunter safety classes, camping, fishing and boating information. Outdoor recreational opportunities are available through county parks and outdoor wildlife areas.

Tax preparation for low and moderate income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to people 60 and older, for the 2026 tax season.

Pilot program to provide free bus, MOBY, and ORBT rides during Metro’s regular service hours for any K-12 student in Omaha and the surrounding area.

High school students must show school-issued IDs when boarding. Students without school-issued ID, may receive a free Metro K-12 card by bringing proof of high school enrollment to the Metro office Mon-Fri 8:30 am-4 pm.

Elementary and middle school students can inform the bus operators that they are students.

Blind Rehabilitation Services provides advanced low vision optometry, legally blind rehabilitation, and visual impairment support for veterans. The program includes opportunities for mutual support among individuals with visual impairments, fostering the sharing of information, resources, practical tips for daily living, and encouragement. Eligibility is limited to veterans who meet the required guidelines.

General medical care for all. Services include:

- Audiology.

- Family medicine.

- ENT.

- Gastroenterology.

- Internal medicine.

- Pediatrics.

Provides temporary assistance for basic needs, including rent/lot rent, utilities, and food vouchers for eligible county residents. Cannot be on Subsidized Housing, or a Veteran.

Additionally, the program may provide financial assistance for burial or cremation expenses to help families cover funeral and interment costs. 

Provides section 8 housing choice vouchers to low-Income households. Also provides lists of housing.

Provides a 24-hour group home living for adults with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Free and confidential services for pregnant women.

Pregnancy tests by appointment or walk in basis as available.

Adoption education and referrals.

Sexual risk avoidance education.

Fetal development and pregnancy education and classes.

Parenting classes.

Fatherhood classes.

Bible studies and spiritual support.

Material assistance through Bella's Boutique offers free maternity clothes, baby equipment, baby clothing up to 3T, and free diapers; call for information.

**Toys for Tots applications are closed for this year 2025**

Four Mile and Pioneer Columbus Recreation Centers will help families sign up for 2024 Toys for Tots during the holiday season. Registration begins Nov. 1, 2024, and goes through Nov 30, 2024. Gift pick-ups are Mon Dec. 16, 2024, from 12 pm- 6 pm; Tue Dec. 17, 2024, from 3 pm-8 pm and Dec. 18, 2024, from 12 pm-6 pm at the center where families register.

Provides scholarships to veterans who return from duty with an opportunity to get integrated back into their community through officiating.
