Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax preparation and electronic filing for low- to moderate-income Iowans, starting February 2026. Certified community volunteers prepare taxes with computer software and help with special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled. 2026 Extension Supported VITA Locations

Offers trained volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children involved in the child welfare system. Volunteers advocate with the court to ensure each child's voice is heard, their needs are met, and they have a safe, permanent home.

Emergency Assistance may be available for adults with minor children.  Limited to rental situations only. Emergency Assistance is available only once in a 24-month period.

Provides intense support to families receiving FIP (Family Investment Plan). Structured home visits conducted by family development specialists include assessments that support healthy self-exploration, science-informed goal pursuit designed to build core skills, a framework and process for career development, and connecting families to stabilizing supports and career opportunities in the community.

Offers MEDICAID (Medical Assistance) to people who are low income and aged (65 and older), disabled (including blindness), women needing treatment for cancer or pre-cancerous conditions of breast or cervix (who have been screened and diagnosed through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection program and who do not have credible health insurance coverage), children under 21 years of age, pregnant women, parents or other caretaker relatives of children under age 18 (or under age 19 if they are attending secondary school and are expected to graduate before age 19). Medicaid will pay the costs of Health care, Dental care, In-home health care, Nursing facility care or Residential facility care.

Offers a free and confidential crisis line for veterans. Can also help with local suicide prevention coordinators, who can connect veterans to ongoing counseling and services in their area.

Offers emergency shelter and child welfare services to youth. The shelter provides a safe place for youth in crisis, including those who have run away, are experiencing homelessness, have been abused or neglected, or are adjudicated and waiting for court action.

ASP serves as the reception and classification center for all juvenile males adjudicated to the adult institutional corrections system CLARINDA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY (712-542-5634): A medium security men’s institution emphasizing: academic education, violence prevention, anger management, parenting programs, psychological counseling, cognitive skills training, substance abuse program, prison industry (trailer production), private family visitation, reentry program, pre-release program, vocational training, and special needs programs FT. DODGE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY (515-574-4700): A medium security men’s facility, emphasizing: academic and vocational education, psychological services and counseling, cognitive skills training, substance abuse program, reentry programs, anger management, parenting programs, family violence program, and MIFVPP IOWA CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN, MITCHELLVILLE (515-725-5042): Serves as the reception and classification center for all females entering the adult institutional corrections system. A medium security women's facility emphasizing academic and vocational education, prison industries, psychological counseling, cognitive skill training, substance abuse programs, violence prevention, pre-release program, reentry programs, anger management and parenting programs IOWA MEDICAL & CLASSIFICATION CENTER, CORALVILLE (319-626-2391): IMCC serves as the reception and classification center for all males 18 years of age and older entering the adult institutional corrections system. After extensive testing and assessment of risk, health and cognitive skills, they are then processed on to other facilities. A medium security general population unit is in operation at IMCC, as well as, a special needs unit with both medical and mental health beds. IMCC also runs the only licensed forensic psychiatric hospital in the state, providing inpatient psychiatric and evaluation service to non-adjudicated patients IOWA STATE PENITENTIARY, FT. MADISON (319-372-5432): A maximum security prison facility for men emphasizing: academic and vocational education, prison industries, psychological counseling, cognitive skills training, and offender treatment MT. PLEASANT WOMEN'S UNIT, Mt. Pleasant (319-385-9511): A medium/minimum security institution for women emphasizing cognitive based programming including substance abuse, sex offender programming, thinking for a change, and academic programming. In addition, mental health re-entry and recreation services are provided NEWTON CORRECTIONAL FACILITY (641-792-7552): A medium security facility for men. Includes: violence prevention, anger management, parenting programs, psychological counseling, cognitive skills training, licensed substance abuse program, pre-release programs, off grounds work programs, Storybook, GED and literacy, CALM, Thinking for Success, criminality, Braille, Key-life skills, Blackhawk County Re-entry, prison industries, etc. NORTH CENTRAL CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, Rockwell City (712-297-7521): A minimum security facility for men emphasizing academic and vocational education, psychological counseling, cognitive skills training, licensed substance abuse program, parenting programs, leader dog training, family violence prevention, pre-release program, anger management, off grounds work, prison industries, and many other programs. Services include providing shelter, food, clothing, case management, and classes (parenting, money management, job preparation, etc.).

Provides the following, infectious disease investigation, patient education, and limited follow-up tests, information on international travel, STD/STI education, testing, treatment, referral, and partner notification for specific STD's (including gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV), Tuberculosis (TB) testing, initial chest x-rays, laboratory tests, and medical evaluations for positive TB reactors, Tuberculosis medications and follow up testing may be provided as medically indicated, Hepatitis C testing, harm reduction services (including access to sterile syringes, safe disposal of syringes, other injection supplies, education, and referrals), Naloxone (Narcan) education and distribution, Fentanyl test strips and male and receptive partner condoms.

Provides individual and group counseling services for adults as well as independent mental health and psychiatric evaluations through workers' compensation.

In person appointments are all done in West Des Moines. However, there is telehealth services in Ames and the wider Iowa community.

Offers eye screenings for vision, color and depth-perception, glaucoma, cataracts and full retinal evaluations. Also offers custom-fit eyewear and contact lenses for all ages.
