Special Olympics Iowa

A non-profit organization that uses sports training and quality competition to provide people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in a larger society where they are accepted and respected. Special Olympics Iowa currently serves 11,000 athletes and sports partners in all 99 counties in Iowa. Training and competition is offered in 23 different sports throughout the year. SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS: Challenge Days are specially designed events using switch activated equipment for athletes with the most severe and profound physical and intellectual disabilities. Unified Sports is the pairing of athletes with intellectual disabilities and those without on the same team. Athlete Leadership Program (ALP) is designed to train athletes in literacy and speaking skills to enable the athletes to serve as public speakers, board members and other leadership roles in the community. Healthy Athletes is a screening program promoting greater overall health and fitness for the athletes. "Young Athletes" is an introductory program offering play day activities and socialization skills for children with intellectual disabilities between the ages of 2 and 7.

Works with families to get them enrolled in the 1st Five Healthy Mental Development Initiative. 1st Five program builds partnerships between physician practices and public service providers to enhance high-quality well-child care. 1st Five promotes the use of developmental tools that support healthy mental development for young children during the first five years. By using a tool for all children that includes social-emotional development and family risk factors, providers are able to identify children at risk for developmental concerns that, if left untreated, would play out later in life.

Ronald McDonald Family Room at UnityPoint Health - St Luke's Hospital

Parents of children receiving treatment at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids are now able to have all the comforts of home while remaining just steps from their child’s bedside through the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Luke’s Hospital. A Ronald McDonald Family Room can serve dual roles. Families from farther distances often welcome the opportunity to grab a quick snack or use the sleep rooms for a good nights sleep without leaving the hospital. The Family Room also serves local families who may live nearby, but do not want to leave the hospital for a meal, a shower, or to do a quick load of laundry. The Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Luke’s Hospital serves families of children being treated on the NICU Unit, Pediatric Unit, or Child/Adolescent Unit.

Heartland Area Education Agency

Provides services for youth individuals ages 0-21 with disabilities and their families. The agency screens students for hearing, vision and speech issues, as well as emotional, psychological and behavior issues. Services are provided at school or at the child's home. In most cases, Heartland AEA staff work closely with the staff of the school the child attends. Parents or others may refer children by calling any of Heartland AEA's offices throughout the agency's 11-county area, or parents may contact their local school for more information about Heartland AEA.

Children who are at risk for developmental delays or who have a developmental condition are entitled to an evaluation. This includes children with birth defects, vision or hearing concerns, language delays, autism, head injury, behavior problems, gross or fine motor delays, and feeding difficulties. After an evaluation, they may qualify for service coordination and a written Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). Under this plan, the following services may be provided: assistive technology, audiology, communication, occupational and physical therapy, social work, home-based instruction and vision.
