State Historical Society of Iowa

Assists in the Library and Archives Research. Whether researching as an author, educator, student, reporter, curator, archeologist, preservationist, historian or genealogist, research materials are provided on microfilm, and books. Most books are browsable on the shelves. Patrons who are interested in accessing the State Archives and Special Collections or Library materials that are not on the open stacks are encouraged to make an appointment and advise staff two business days in advance about the materials they would like to research. Offers MEDICAID (Medical Assistance) to people who are low income and aged (65 and older), disabled (including blindness), women needing treatment for cancer or pre-cancerous conditions of breast or cervix (who have been screened and diagnosed through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection program and who do not have credible health insurance coverage), children under 21 years of age, pregnant women, parents or other caretaker relatives of children under age 18 (or under age 19 if they are attending secondary school and are expected to graduate before age 19). Medicaid will pay the costs of Health care, Dental care, In-home health care, Nursing facility care or Residential facility care.

DODGE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY (515-574-4700): A medium security men’s facility, emphasizing: academic and vocational education, psychological services and counseling, cognitive skills training, substance abuse program, reentry programs, anger management, parenting programs, family violence program, and MIFVPP IOWA CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN, MITCHELLVILLE (515-725-5042): Serves as the reception and classification center for all females entering the adult institutional corrections system. A medium security women's facility emphasizing academic and vocational education, prison industries, psychological counseling, cognitive skill training, substance abuse programs, violence prevention, pre-release program, reentry programs, anger management and parenting programs IOWA MEDICAL & CLASSIFICATION CENTER, CORALVILLE (319-626-2391): IMCC serves as the reception and classification center for all males 18 years of age and older entering the adult institutional corrections system. After extensive testing and assessment of risk, health and cognitive skills, they are then processed on to other facilities. A medium security general population unit is in operation at IMCC, as well as, a special needs unit with both medical and mental health beds. IMCC also runs the only licensed forensic psychiatric hospital in the state, providing inpatient psychiatric and evaluation service to non-adjudicated patients IOWA STATE PENITENTIARY, FT. Clerk of the District Court

Clerk of the District Court, Mental Health Division assists with process of securing involuntary hospitalization of the mentally ill or those with substance abuse issues. Respondent is given a copy of signed application when they are taken into custody. Persons signing the application must be present to testify. Respondent is represented by a lawyer and the applicant is represented by the county attorney. Hearing determines if the respondent is seriously mentally impaired.

Webster County Farm Service Agency

Administers Federal USDA and Farm Service Agency programs in Iowa. This includes programs that stabilize farm income, help farmers conserve soil and water resources, provide credit to new and disadvantaged farmers or ranchers, and help farm operations recover from the effects of disaster. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach - Crawford County

Offers a course on becoming a master gardener. Program is centered around research-based horticulture and gardening knowledge and practices to educate people and coordinate projects that promote healthy communities. Register for the core course as a Pro-Hort trainee if you are not interested in volunteering. Master Gardener Program is looking for volunteers who can make a commitment to the program – 40 volunteer hours and 40 education hours in the first two years. Then 20 volunteer hours and 10 education hours after the Master Gardener training.

VITA Tax Site - Virtual Appointments

Provides a free virtual tax credit clinic to prepare federal and state income taxes for low to moderate income households.

Starting January 15, 2026, visit website to schedule a virtual appointment. (https://vita.unl.edu) Tax appointments begin Feb 1 and run through Apr 10. Tax documents can be uploaded on a separate website starting Feb 2, 2026. (www.getyourrefund.org/TCAN)

Virtual tax preparation is available in addition to facilitated self-assistance (schedule an appointment under the 'Need Assistance' tab).

The scope of work that can be done within the VITA site is defined by the IRS. If a return is considered "out of scope" for the site, VITA Volunteers will not be able to prepare the return.

Provides families with support and services related to lead poisoning and poisoning prevention and is housed in the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). There are currently 19 contracted childhood lead programs that provide services in 48 counties. IDPH provides services in the remaining 51 counties.

Veterans Path to Hope - Crystal Lake

Offers comprehensive support to veterans, military personnel, and their families to address challenges related to deployments, reintegration, and accessing needed supports. The program is staffed by certified veteran peer support specialists and therapists who provide peer-to-peer mentoring, group support, and therapeutic counseling

Assistance is available to help veterans understand and access the full range of services they are entitled to. Peer support specialists will provide support to connect with needed services as well as support in overcoming barriers.

Veterans and their family members are encouraged to drop in or call with any concern; if the agency cannot directly assist, it is part of a network that can provide additional resources. Programs include weekly support groups for Vietnam veterans led by Vet Center therapist; Wednesday evening gathering veterans focused on food and camaraderie. Additional support meetings are initiated as needs arise.
